Thrift BUY or BYE?
You come across a Gentle Fawn Caden Coat at the thrift store. Do you immediately BUY or say BYE, BYE? Let’s discuss the coat and the brand so you can make up your mind if you ever find yourself in this situation, like I did!
I came across the Gentle Fawn brand a few years ago, and oddly enough, it was at a thrift store! Standing in the aisle at Mission Mart, looking at a sweet dress with a brand name that was unfamiliar to me—Gentle Fawn. I got the impression it was something I should look into before continuing on my way, so I Googled the brand right then and there! After reading a few pages on their website and browsing Poshmark for a minute or two, I was sold on their company promise and stylish clothes.
Immediately I liked their values and that they’re a Canadian company—whoooot! They seem to take into consideration the planet, materials, and community, which appeals to me. I was intrigued and kept my eyes peeled for where to find them locally. Most recently, one of my favorite local boutiques, PHIT’Cetera, has been bringing in some beautiful GF items, and I’ve also seen a few things at Poppy & Olive.
Last week, I did a little thrift shopping around the city of Halifax, and just when I was about to call it a day.. I took a quick peek through the jacket section and found this beautiful grey/brown (groown? bro-ey?) colored Caden Coat.
From what I can gather, the Gentle Fawn Caden Coat first appeared around 2021 and was a popular choice, a lot of influencer static Instagram photos! Since then, the coat has undergone some slight variations—updated collar, new pockets, new name—but the basic design remains the same: a full-length timeless piece that effortlessly combines style and comfort.
My version, The Caden, is crafted from a soft, brushed fabric. It features a chic shawl collar, practical patch pockets, hidden snaps, and a removable belt to cinch the waist. The relaxed fit ensures it complements various body types and outfits. Depending on who you talk to, some may say it has that "housecoat chic" appeal... but I happen to love a housecoat!
Here’s why I love it:
-
Perfect for the ‘Seasonal Transition’: Ideal for fall and spring, providing warmth without bulk.
-
Urban Adventures: Perfect for city outings, whether shopping, dining, or attending events.
-
Travel Companion: Its comfortable fit and stylish appearance make it a great choice for travel, ensuring you look chic on the go.
Styling Tips:
-
Casual Day Out: Pair it with a simple white tee, distressed jeans, and ankle boots for a relaxed yet polished look. Bonus points (from me!) if you work in some sort of animal print!
-
Office Ready: Layer it over a blouse and tailored trousers, adding heels to elevate the ensemble. Maybe a rich-colored bag to complete the look?
-
Evening Elegance: Drape it over a sleek dress with statement jewelry and heels for a sophisticated appearance. A slicked-back bun, and you can be ready in 10 minutes (or 45, if you’re like me = time blindness—ha, ha).
What else to pair it with?
-
Accessories: Complement with a chunky scarf and leather gloves during cooler months.
-
Footwear: Depending on the occasion, it pairs well with sneakers, ankle boots, or heels.
-
Bottoms: From jeans to skirts, the adaptable style ensures it harmonizes with various wardrobe pieces.
Holly’s Choice: I always seem to be the outlier, but I love a statement piece of jewelry like a chunky necklace, or a long necklace... & Call me crazy, but I love myself a brooch! All of which to say, the coat is such a classic, and true staple that it gives even the most chaotic fashion queen (like myself) the freedom to bring the drama in accessories, bags, shoes. I don’t think you can ever overdo it when wearing this solid choice coat.
So, back to my question!
I found this Gentle Fawn Caden Coat at the thrift store. I was excited until I saw the price tag... Dramatic pause...
The coat, which was in used condition, definitely has some piling (but to be fair, I get the impression that piling is to be expected with this type of material). There is a tiny bit of seam that could be tightened in the arms—it’s not gaping or ripped by any means, but it has a loosened seam in some areas.
The thrifted version was priced at $40.00.
Based on the history I found online and the similar versions currently available, if the Caden were available to purchase new today, I think it would be listed at $169.99.
So, what do you think?? Deal or No Deal, on the $40.00 Gentle Fawn Caden Coat??
And did you learn anything new or helpful from this blog post? I’d love to continue to feature different styles and brands! If there’s anything in particular that you’d like me to look into, just say the word—I absolutely love learning about this stuff!
